Work is nearing completion on an expansion of the Nature Trail that winds through Miller Park.
A new recreational trail on the east side of the Park connects to both ends of the current trail. It then extends along the west side of Western Avenue, allowing for cyclists and pedestrians to enter or exit the trail at West 3rd Street. The trail crosses Hubert H. Schultz Blvd. which leads into and out of Miller Park.
The former south entrance/exit of the Nature Trail at Sanborn Street will no longer be available. The recreational trail can be accessed at Schultz Blvd. as well as at a new entrance/exit point at Shay Avenue. The entrance/exit at Walker Street will be improved as part of the current project.
“The City Council wanted to give people, particularly children, greater access to Miller Park without them having to travel on Western Avenue,” explained Sanborn City Administrator Jim Zeutenhorst. For now, a short jog onto Western Avenue will be necessary to cross the railroad tracks. “We’re still working with the railroad to get a rubber type crossing across the railroad tracks but it takes time,” said Zeutenhorst.
In about a month, work will begin on a recreation trail extension off of Sanborn Street that will pass by the pond at the Maris Estates, according to Zeutenhorst.
