Senator Ernst visits Sanborn
Joni Ernst, Iowa’s junior Senator in the U.S. Congress, paid a visit to Sanborn on June 27. It was part of her swing through O’Brien, Osceola and Cherokee counties.
Senator Ernst began her short tour of Sanborn at City Hall. She moved on to AMPI, Locomotion Lanes, Carnegie Hall and Family Health Chiropractic. At all the stops she had a chance to visit with people, hearing their stories and their concerns.
“I do serve on the Ag Committee In the United States Senate as well as our Small Business Committee and it is important to focus on our rural areas and we have programs through both of those committees that really focus on the rural areas,” noted Ernst. “So, just having the opportunity to walk Main Street in Sanborn, visit with a number of the businesses – how they got started, some of the challenges they face – it’s important to hear that. We need to find ways as federal government, state government, local government, but, most importantly, the people of these small communities to not just survive, but to thrive in our hometowns. So it was a pleasure to get out and see everybody and just hear about all of the exciting things going on in Sanborn. The great pleasure, though, was also presenting our Small Business of the Week Award to Dr. Stacy Carlin at Family Health Chiropractic, a very deserving small business in the community.”
“What an honor to receive this award!” remarked Dr. Carlin. “It is a privilege to serve our community. We truly enjoy helping people of all ages achieve a higher level of health and vitality.”
Dr. Carlin attended UNI in Cedar Falls and then Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. In 2005 she married Patrick Carlin who is Superintendent at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Family Health Chiropractic first opened in Waterloo in 2008 but that was not to be Dr. Carlin’s permanent location. “We always talked about raising our children in a small town,” she said. “I grew up in Laurens and Patrick in Graettinger. We heard of the HMS opening and thought it would be amazing to be an hour from our parents and at HMS! We sold the Waterloo office, opened in Sanborn and just celebrated the 15th anniversary of Family Health Chiropractic! Our kids are now 10 and nearly 14. We have really enjoyed being in NW Iowa again. It truly is a great place to raise a family and nothing beats small town Iowa!”
Senator Ernst commented on the importance of maintaining Main Street, downtown and other business areas in these small towns as part of their character. “First impressions are very important when you bring outsiders in,” she noted. “And that’s what you want to do is try and grow your communities. So, they have to know that there are opportunities. If you have storefronts that are available on Main Street or around a square you want to make sure they are presentable and I know that you have great folks with Economic Development here. They work with the community. They make sure that there’s a good impression and that will help draw visitors who are potential residents into the community.”
