Hawk girls deliver from distance to shoot down Trinity

On a night when long-range accuracy was required, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn came through in style. With Trinity Christian clogging the lane area, the Hawks found openings on the perimeter. By pouring in 13 baskets from behind the three-point line, HMS was able to overcome being down 11-0 to ultimately win 63-48 February 2 at Hull. The victory enabled the Hawks to raise their War Eagle Conference record to 5-4 while improving to 12-8 on the season.
Kylee Schiphoff delivered six of those three-point baskets and finished with 25 points. Four treys were part of Gracie Knobloch’s 18-point night. Frankie Mohni added two more threes for her six points and Lindsey Van Es closed out the first half with a trey that drew HMS within five points at 32-27. Rounding out the Hawk scoring were Moriah Otto with seven points and Eliza Tewes with four.
HMS shot 43 percent for the game with 22 baskets in 51 attempts. Seventeen of those hoops came as the result of an assist. Mohni led the way in that category with five while Knobloch and Schiphoff each had four.
The Tigers were 18-of-43 from the field for 42 percent. They hit eight treys of their own with five coming from Makiah De Jager, who was the team’s leading scorer with 22 points. Trinity missed a chance to make the game closer by going 4-for-12 at the foul line. The Hawks sank six of their seven free throw attempts.
Each team totaled 28 rebounds. Schiphoff was a huge presence there as well, grabbing 13 boards. She also made four steals. Knobloch and Mohni each stole the ball five times while Abby Douma blocked five shots. The Tigers committed 17 turnovers and HMS had 11.
