Legal Notice
The Sanborn City Council met in regular session Monday, September 9, in the Donald Kroese Council Chambers. Mayor Randy Lyman called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. with the following Council Members present: Jerry Back, Kevin Groendyke, Larry Reitsma, Brian Visser, and Aaron Wiekamp. Others present: Doug Elgersma, Ryan Postma, Wendy Reed, Adam Roelfs, Miranda Wetrich, and Jim Zeutenhorst.
Motion Reitsma, seconded by Back, to approve the agenda. Roll call was taken. Roll call: Ayes 5 /Nays 0
Miranda Wetrich with the Sanborn Railroad Days Committee presented a request for street closure on Saturday, October 5, 6:00pm-10:00pm for a bag tournament sponsored by Locomotion Lanes. Tentative plans are to close one-half block of West Second Street between Main Street and O’Brien, or one-half block of Main Street between Second and Third Street. Motion made by Groendyke, seconded by Wiekamp, allowing either half block to be closed during the event, vote results: Ayes 5 /Nays 0. Doug Elgersma on behalf of the Golf Board wished to reiterate their desires to secure an equipment replacement fund. Other updates provided regarding the golf season winding down.
A motion was made by Back to approve the consent agenda. Motion seconded by Wiekamp. The following consent agenda items were approved: a. Approve minutes of August 9 meeting b. approve September bills c. O’Brien Co. Snowtrackers 2024 Trails Iowa DOT d. Application for tax abatement under the Urban Revitalization Plan, Commercial Property: Schiphoff. Roll call: Ayes 5 /Nays 0. Zeutenhorst advised Council the Police Department received an applicant who has passed preliminary physical assessments and background checks; Chief Rob is ready to make an offer. Motion made by Groendyke, seconded by Back, to approve offering/hiring Greyden Screacy to fill the second patrol officer vacancy at $48,000.00/year. Roll call: Ayes 5 /Nays 0.
City employees passed continuing education testing. Motion made by Back approving an hourly wage increase for Eric Rogers, from $23.50 to $24.50/hour, for passing Grade I Wastewater, motion seconded by Reitsma. Vote results: Ayes 5 /Nays 0. Motion made by Back, seconded by Reitsma, approving an hourly wage increase for Chad Lyman, from $25.00 to $26.00/hour, for passing Grade I Water Treatment and Grade 1 Water Distribution. Vote results: Ayes 5 /Nays 0.
Zeutenhorst presented a project gaining momentum regarding future water needs for Sanborn. Dakota Mainstream, similar to the Lewis & Clark water project, is in the preliminary stages of collaboration and invited Sanborn to join. Other communities involved: Sheldon, Sioux Center, Alton. An inclusion fee of $3,800 to be part of a feasibility study. Motion by Groendyke, seconded by Wiekamp, to buy-in to Dakota Mainstream. Vote results: Ayes 5 /Nays 0.
Zeutenhorst updated Council on the FEMA Public Assistance application, Sanborn’s 4-year-old deep well issues, Sanborn Light Plant’s electric rate study and generator capabilities, the fire departments’ replacement generator, and Parks & Rec’s pickle ball court project.
There being no further business to come before the Council, Motion Groendyke, seconded by Back to adjourn at 7:09 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting will take place on Monday, October 14, at 5:00p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Roll call was taken. Vote results: Ayes 5 /Nays 0
