Gehlen Catholic starts well to finish Hawk boys

Some easy baskets in the lane helped Gehlen Catholic jump out to a 10-0 lead over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The Jays never looked back in handing HMS a 55-39 loss December 13 at Hartley. The match-up was the season’s first official War Eagle Conference game for the Hawks who fell to 1-4 on the year.
Isaac Schierholz scored 14 points with Lawton Schiphoff adding nine, Jackson Vogt eight, Caden Douma six and Jayden Leth two. Schiphoff assisted on three baskets while Leth, Douma, Vogt and Schierholz each had two assists.
HMS shot 36 percent with 14 baskets in 39 tries. The Hawks sank eight of 21 three-point attempts and three of six free throws.
The 21 HMS rebounds included five from both Douma and Schierholz and four each from Schiphoff and Vogt. Douma made four steals. On the other side of the coin, the Hawks were guilty of 24 turnovers. Douma blocked three shots with Leth and Schierholz each issuing one rejection.
