Strong Second half carries HMS girls past Remsen St. Mary’s

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn turned around a four point halftime deficit in a big way. HMS outscored Remsen St. Mary’s by 19 points in the second half to defeat the visiting Hawks 50-35 December 20 at Hartley. The victory allowed the host Hawks to move to 3-0 in the War Eagle Conference and take a 7-2 overall record into the Christmas break.
Kylee Schiphoff scored 16 of her game-high 21 points after halftime. On the defensive side, Lindsey Van Es shadowed the visitors’ leading scorer, Hallie Bunkers, helping to hold her below her average.
Abby Douma scored 12 points and Moriah Otto tallied 10. Eliza Tewes added four points and Gracie Knobloch three. Knobloch also supplied five assists.
HMS was 20-of-48 from the field to shoot 42 percent. The home Hawks were just 2-of-14 from three-point range but did sink eight of 11 free throws.
Schiphoff and Otto each collected 10 rebounds. Douma grabbed five and Tewes four. Douma blocked eight shots, Schiphoff two and Addy Sheeler one. Schiphoff came away with four steals.
HMS was guilty of 20 turnovers. The stats for St. Mary’s were not available.
