Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn took on shorthanded bowling teams from Sioux Central January 14 at Spencer Bowl. This was to have been an invitational meet in December with three additional schools but it was postponed. It was rescheduled as a varsity dual with Sioux Central. HMS beat a Sioux Central team of only three boys by the score of 2517-1662. The Rebels had just two bowlers competing in the girls match-up, won by HMS 2009-845.
“Both boys and girls teams emerged victorious, but not without adjusting  to its challenges,” commented Hawk coach Julia Meyer. “They had to adapt to wood lanes that are in Spencer’s alley, which differ from the more common synthetic lanes we play on in Sanborn and a few other sites. It was undoubtedly a learning experience. We faced the adversity head-on, kept giving our best until the very end, and relied on the skills we practice every day to succeed.”
The high games for the boys included 223 by Eli Mastbergen, 202 by Jack Mastbergen, 201 by Graham Lux and 197 by Dawson Niichel. Jack rolled the high two-game total of 382 with Eli close behind at 380. The Baker games for the boys were 190, 132, 131, 129 and 170.
“The girls put in a lot of effort to adapt on how to bowl the wooden lanes also these past few meets, and working hard at it,” said Meyer. “They’ve been improving and becoming better at making the necessary adjustments to achieve the best results. While they admit they’re not particularly fond of the wooden lanes, they’re looking forward to returning to the synthetic lanes at Locomotion Lanes.”
Addison Huffman bowled the high game of 173 with Jordan Lux rolling a 158 and Mason VerHelst a 153. Huffman’s 301 was the high two-game total for HMS. The girls’ Baker games were 142, 119, 154, 102 and 135.
