Hawks put forth a well-rounded performance in blowout of GTRA
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn played well in three phases of the game in handing Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire a 15-4 defeat in four innings July 1 at Ruthven. The Hawks had 10 hits, committed only one error and got a strong performance from freshman pitcher Lexi Schmillen.
“The girls played a great game,” expressed HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “They came out hitting the ball right away and played some good defense. Lexi pitched a good game and stayed tough on the mound. They are coming together at the best time they could, right before tournament time. We need to just keep focusing on the little things to get through each game one at a time.”
Schmillen got through this game allowing nine hits. All four of the runs were earned. She fanned three batters and walked three.
Eliza Tewes backed Schmillen’s pitching with a 2-for-3 night at the plate which included five runs batted in. Gracie Knobloch had three RBI’s. Mahkenzie Mattingly recorded two hits and two RBI’s. Her courtesy runner Jenna Hengeveld scored twice. Cammy Wilson had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Schmillen scored two runs.
HMS got out to an 8-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and five in the second. They added two more runs in the second and then put up another five-spot in the fourth.
