Hawks split doubleheader with South O’Brien

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got a win and a loss as the Hawks played a doubleheader with South O’Brien. The teams met June 2 at Hartley but lightning forced the suspension of the War Eagle Conference game. It was resumed June 30 at Paullina prior to the regularly scheduled contest. The first game resumed with HMS trailing 6-0 but the Hawks roared back to tie the game and then went on to win 14-7. The Wolverines took the lead early in game two on the way to an 11-4 victory.

After scoring six times in the second inning, the Hawks produced a seven-run fourth to take what proved to be an insurmountable lead. “The girls came out on fire last night to continue the rain delay game to take the conference win!,” commented HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “It was a lot of fun to watch them attack the ball and run bases aggressively. Gracie (Knobloch) pitched a good game.”
Mahkenzie Mattingly was 3-for-4 at the plate. Eliza Tewes drove in three runs. Knobloch was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Lexi Schmillen also drove in a pair of runs. Knobloch went the distance, striking out nine batters, walking four and hitting one. She allowed eight hits. Six of the runs were earned. The Hawks committed two errors.

Similar run production was needed by HMS in the nightcap but it didn’t materialize. The Hawks were limited to four hits. Kamryn Ebel pitched all six innings, yielding nine hits. “The second game Kamryn pitched well,” said Bronstad. “They hit us a little better but our defense was still good. Our bats didn’t come around to continue the momentum.” Ebel recorded three strikeouts, three walks and three hit batters. Seven of the 11 runs were earned. There were four Hawk errors.
HMS was able to tie the game briefly with three runs in the second inning. Addy Sheeler and Lindsey Van Es both drew walks and Ebel laid down a bunt single. Tewes and Knobloch hit back-to-back singles in the fifth inning and Ava Shriver doubled home Cammy Wilson in the sixth.
