Fierce winds tested golfers’ mettle as Hawks hosted Unity
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s boys golf team contended with Unity Christian and the windy conditions in a War Eagle Conference golf meet held April 12 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club. As in the only previous meet of the season, HMS produced a 199 total. It left the team 12 strokes off the 187 stroke effort by the Knights.
“We started out with too many penalty strokes, but did another great job of ‘digging’ ourselves out and battling back to score what we could,” observed Hawk head coach Mark Japenga. “We didn’t let the elements or our penalties dictate our effort or mental toughness.”
Samuel Heyn carded a 47, good for third place. Ben Haack was one stroke behind after firing a 48.
Team scores: Unity Christian 187, HMS 199.
Placings: 1st, Jack Noteboom (Unity) 44; 2nd, Titan Hulstein (Unity), 45; 3rd, Samuel Heyn (HMS), 47.
HMS varsity scores: Samuel Heyn 47, Ben Haack 48, Lucas Kroese 52, Spencer McCarter 52, Wyatt Borden 55, Charlie Conway 63.
