Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn welcomed seven other teams to the HMS Volleyball Tournament held September 28 at Hartley. Pool A consisted of Okoboji, Rock Valley, Sioux City West and the Hawks. Battling in Pool B were Gehlen Catholic, Newell-Fonda, South O’Brien and Trinity Christian.
HMS opened with Okoboji and it was the Pioneers winning in straight sets 21-8 and 21-16. The Hawks evened their record by defeating West 21-12 and 21-11. HMS then took on Rock Valley with each team looking to advance to the semifinals. The Rockets took the first set 21-13 but HMS rallied to capture the second 21-19. Rock Valley won the third and deciding set 15-8. HMS exited the tourney with a season record of 5-11.
As the winner of Pool A, the Rockets moved on to defeat South O’Brien, the Pool B runner-up, in three sets. Okoboji lost in three to Pool B winner Newell-Fonda. The Mustangs won the championship match by topping Rock Valley 23-21 and 21-6.
Kylee Schiphoff had four of the Hawks’ 10 kills against Okoboji. Frankie Mohni set up all 10 kills and was 5-of-5 serving. She and Lindsey Van Es each came up with seven digs.
Abby Douma produced six kills to power the win over the Wolverines. Schiphoff and Moriah Otto each contributed four kills. Mohni again had 10 set assists. Douma and Mohni teamed up for a block and Otto notched five digs. Otto was also a force at the service line, going 16-for-16 with four ace serves.
Douma and Schiphoff each had four kills in the match with Rock Valley. Mohni’s assist total was 14. Lindsey Van Es dug up 10 Rocket attacks. Mohni was 9-of-9 serving with an ace and Schiphoff’s 8-of-8 serving included two aces.
