Hawks serve up a sweep over Harris-Lake Park

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn selected the serving tool from its toolbox and went to work on Harris-Lake Park. HMS served at 94 percent with 12 aces to sweep away the Wolves 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22 October 8 at Lake Park. The win allowed the Hawks to raise their War Eagle Conference record to 3-5 and their season mark to 6-12.
“The ladies were spot on hitting serves last night,” praised HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “HLP was really struggling with their serve receive and our girls did a fantastic job of hitting their spots and being aggressive with it. This created a lot of free balls from HLP which we used to fuel our offense.”
Down 2-0 in sets, the Wolves came out fighting to start the third set. “In each of set one and two we got a nice lead and just kept adding to it,” noted Kroese. “Set three we actually got down a little early, but midway through the match took the lead and were able to finish the match. I was proud of our efforts as I never felt like we weren’t in a position to finish the match with a win.”
Kylee Schiphoff was 16-of-17 serving with five aces. Eliza Tewes enjoyed a 15-of-15 serving night with two aces. Frankie Mohni added another three aces on 15-of-17 serving.
Reaching double digits in digs were Lindsey Van Es with 12 and Tewes and Mohni with 11 apiece. “I believe our high dig numbers are a result of HLP doing a nice job of staying in the volleys but our girls responded by moving their feet and getting to the attacks HLP was sending at us.”
Schiphoff supplied eight kills to the attack and also assisted Eva Stammer and Tewes on a pair of blocks. Moriah Otto and Abby Douma each added five kills. Mohni provided 17 set assists.
