Hawks girls hold off Woodbury Central to win season opener
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn built a 14-point halftime lead and then withstood a Woodbury Central comeback to defeat the Wildcat girls 55-52 November 25 at Moville. This contest tipped off the season for each team.
HMS shot 28 percent from the field with 17 baskets in 62 attempts. Woodbury Central was was 21-of-63 from the floor for 33 percent. The Hawks enjoyed an advantage from long range as well as at the free throw line. HMS hit a half-dozen three-pointers and the home team made just two. From the line the Hawks were 15-of-25 and the Wildcats 8-of-16.
The victors got 15 points from Kylee Schiphoff, 10 from both Abby Douma and Lindsey Van Es, eight from Gracie Knobloch, six from Frankie Mohni, five from Moriah Otto and one from Addy Sheeler. Schiphoff notched three assists and three steals to lead the team in both of those categories as well.
Rebounding ended up big in favor of HMS by a 51-30 margin, However, the opposite was true where turnovers were concerned. The Hawks were guilty of 20 miscues while Woodbury Central turned the ball over 11 times. Otto came away with 13 rebounds while Mohni grabbed nine, Van Es captured seven and Schiphoff and Douma each pulled down eight. Otto made two steals and Douma and Schiphoff swatted away three shots apiece.
