Hawks come up just short against Sioux Central girls

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had a shot in the air with seconds left that likely would have won the game against Sioux Central. The shot was just off the mark, however, and the Rebels escaped with a 49-47 win in a non-conference affair played November 26 at Hartley. The outcome dropped the Hawks to 1-1 while Sioux Central improved to 2-0.
After jumping out to an 11-0 lead, HMS found itself trailing 32-28 at halftime. The Rebels increased the margin to nine at 43-34 entering the final quarter.
The Hawks scored the first five points of the quarter to get back in the game. Two baskets apiece from Abby Douma and Moriah Otto drew HMS within a point at 48-47 with 23 seconds remaining. After the Hawks intentionally committed several fouls, Sioux Central was finally in the bonus with 10 seconds left. The second of two free throws was missed and the Hawks got the rebound trailing by two. HMS was able to advance the ball and give Gracie Knobloch a good look for three from the left of the key but the shot missed and the Rebels secured the ball as time ran out.
Otto finished with 16 points and Douma 14. Kylee Schiphoff drained four three-pointers to total 12 points. Eliza Tewes and Knobloch each hit a basket for two points and Addy Sheeler sank a free throw for one point. Frankie Mohni totaled five assists while Schiphoff and Otto each had three. Avery Wilson led Sioux Central with 20 points.
HMS was 20-of-47 from the field for 43 percent. The Rebels shot 29 percent (17-of-58) but hit 10 treys compared to just the four for the Hawks. Sioux Central was 5-of-7 from the free throw line and HMS 3-of-10.
The Hawks were guilty of 30 turnovers and the visitors committed 18. Knobloch made four steals and Otto three. The latter also pulled down 16 of the team’s 42 rebounds as HMS out-rebounded the Rebels by 17. Schiphoff collected eight rebounds, Douma five, Knobloch four and Tewes three. Douma recorded two blocked shots and Otto one.
