Tree removal resumes in Sanborn

The latest round of tree removal in Sanborn is underway. Ash trees on the City right-of-way are being removed on the east-west streets.
“We may get to a couple of north-south streets yet this winter,” said Sanborn City Administrator Jim Zeutenhorst. “Winter is a good time to do the removal.”
Zeutenhorst noted that the City Park has over 30 trees that are looking bad and need to be removed. “We plan to do the removal in the City Park after the temperature drops again so as not to tear up the ground,” said Zeutenhorst. He noted that whip trees as replacements in the Park would likely be too susceptible to damage. “We’ll probably have to get 6-8 foot trees to replace them,” said Zeutenhorst.”
The City began large-scale removal of diseased trees in August of 2023 prior to the resurfacing work done on 3rd Street. Starting earlier in the year also fit better into the schedule of Schwebach Tree Service, which removed the dead and dying trees and is doing so again this winter.
The City has plans to continue the removal process next winter. “The plan is this time next year to remove the trees north of Highway 18 and on the rest of the north-south streets,” said Zeutenhorst.
