Sluggish Hawks lose to Sheldon boys
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn stepped out of conference to take on Siouxland Conference member Sheldon. The offense struggled for HMS in a 65-23 loss January 13 at Sheldon. The Orabs improved to 5-7 with the win.
“I thought we came out flat and lacked energy,” observed HMS head coach Naet Hoaglund. “We struggled to find any kind of rhythm on the offensive end. We played passive and our ball movement suffered. We couldn’t manufacture the shots that we wanted and our offense became a real grind. On the defensive end we failed to play connected and were out of sync much of the night. Give credit to Sheldon, they shot lights out and were able to capitalize on the open looks we gave them. They could do pretty much anything they wanted on the offensive end and let things spiral. It was a kind of a perfect storm and unfortunately we happened to be on the wrong side of it.”
The Orabs made 52 percent of their shots with 25 baskets in 48 attempts. They were particularly deadly from deep with 13 treys in 22 tries. HMS was 8-of-31 from the floor for 26 percent. The Hawks were successful on just three of 16 three-point launches and four of 10 free throws. Sheldon was 2-of-5 at the foul line.
For HMS Isaac Schierholz scored 11 points, Alex Billings six, Caden Douma four and Jackson Vogt two. The Hawks did have assists on five of their eight baskets with Caden Douma and Schierholz notching two and Vogt one.
HMS committed 15 turnovers and the Orabs nine. Vogt, Schierholz, Kolby Douma and Grant Kunzman each made one steal. The leading rebounder was Schierholz with six.
