Harris-Lake Park holds off Hawk girls


Harris-Lake Park turned a 12-point second-quarter deficit into a two-point lead at halftime and went on to slip past Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 50-45 January 14 at Hartley. Although the game remained close, the Wolves never trailed in the second half. The Hawks were within a point with two minutes remaining but HLP hit a pair of free throws and then stole the ball and scored on a layup to seal the deal. The loss dropped the Hawks to 3-2 in the War Eagle Conference and to 8-5 overall.
The Wolves made 15 steals in all as HMS was guilty of 23 turnovers. For the Hawks, Gracie Knobloch, Kylee Schiphoff and Moriah Otto each had two steals. HLP turned the ball over 13 times.
Schiphoff scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Abby Douma notched 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. Knobloch’s five points accompanied five assists and four rebounds. Frankie Mohni had eight points and two assists and Otto three points.
HMS shot 32 percent (16-of-50) and the Wolves 33 percent (18-of-55). The Hawks were 6-of-23 from behind the three-point line and 7-of-11 at the free throw line. Harris-Lake Park hit nine of its 25 trey attempts and five of 12 charity tosses.
