Hawk girls unable to solve West Lyon press in Regional tourney loss

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn did not play badly offensively against West Lyon – when they could maintain possession of the ball. The Wildcats pressed HMS into committing 36 turnovers and won the Class 2A Region 6 quarterfinal 59-32 February 18 at Inwood.
“Tuesday night’s game didn’t go as we expected in the least,” commented Hawk head coach Ashley Tessum. “Our biggest downfall was consistently breaking their press. This caused us to have way too many turnovers, which they took full advantage of, scoring off most of our turnovers.”

HMS shot 42 percent from the floor (11-of-26) compared to 33 percent (21-of-64) for the Wildcats. West Lyon connected on six of their 22 three-point attempts while the Hawks were 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. At the free throw line the Wildcats were 11-of-19 and HMS 8-of-13.
Moriah Otto scored nine points, Gracie Knobloch six, Kylee Schiphoff and Eliza Tewes four points each and Abby Douma, Frankie Mohni and Addy Sheeler three points apiece. Knobloch and Schiphoff each contributed two assists. West Lyon featured four double figure scorers with Kyndra Gramstad and Olivia Feucht getting 11 points apiece and Annie Metzger and Taya Christie each scoring 10.
The Hawks outrebounded West Lyon 31-26 but the Wildcats did come up with 12 offensive boards. Schiphoff and Douma each collected eight rebounds with Otto grabbing six. Douma blocked six shots and Knobloch came away with three steals. The Wildcats turned the ball over 10 times.
HMS finished the year with a record of 13-9. “Although the season didn’t end as we had hoped it would, we saw a lot of positives and growth throughout the season,” said Tessum. “We had a very talented group of multi-sport athletes, and I’m proud of them for all the things they did right this season.”
Playing their final basketball game for the Hawks were seniors Douma, Knobloch, Mohni, Schiphoff, Sheeler and Tewes. “This group of seniors has been a lot of fun to coach over the years, not only due to their athletic ability, but because of their knowledge of the game as well,” said Tessum. “They will make excellent basketball coaches someday. This is a memorable group for many reasons, and their presence on the court will be missed next season!”
