On Wednesday, March 19, one day before the official beginning of Spring, Winter held sway with blizzard warnings being issued for the area. Sanborn missed out on most of the mess, receiving just 1.8 inches of snow. What snow did come down was blown horizontally by the strong winds which had prompted a wind advisory. Although areas to the south and east reported much greater snowfall (7.5 to 9.5 inches), Sanborn still was affected as the wet, heavy snow melted and then froze creating icy conditions. Over 51,000 Iowans lost their electricity due to snapped lines and poles. MidAmerican Energy reported that at one time 1,220 customers were impacted in the Le Mars-to-Cherokee-to-Storm Lake corridor. Many were back online by 10:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Last week’s heavy, wet snow which froze, combined with strong winds, were too much for this small tree, photographed at 412 Floyd Street after the snow had melted.
