It’s graduation as normal for HMS Class of 2021
Graduation at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had a very familiar look to it this year. After last year’s Commencement Exercises were postponed to July because of COVID-19 and attendance was limited, all were welcome to the high school May 16 to salute the Class of 2021 at the normal time of year.
The HMS High School Band provided the prelude music of “Moscow, 1941” and then came the traditional playing of Ployhar’s “Fanfare & Processional” as the graduates processed in. The welcome was given by Nathan Hemiller, high school Principal.
The senior speakers were Valedictorian Gabe Bronstad, who extended thank you’s and recalled the years spent with his classmates at HMS, and Salutatorian Sam Heyn, who offered some points of advice to his fellow graduates.
The Senior Slideshow was then presented. It came together thanks to the efforts of one of the graduates, Elle Mastbergen.
The Rose Ceremony has become an annual part of the Commencement Exercises. Each of the graduates attending the program was given a rose to immediately present to his or her parents/guardians.
The Seniors were presented by Superintendent Patrick Carlin. Principal Hemiller announced the Awarding of Diplomas, and the Diplomas were presented by HMS Board Member, Ryan Haack. The Senior Choir followed with their performance of “Five More Minutes.” Hemiller made the Declaration of Graduates and the seniors were instructed to move their tassels from the right to the left side of their caps. Soon the caps were sent airborne by the celebrating graduates, just in time for the Recessional.
