Big inning carries Trinity Christian past Hawks
An eight-run fifth inning by Trinity Christian put Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a deficit which it could not overcome. In the end, the Tigers came away with a 14-6 victory June 3 at Hartley.
Before Trinity dropped the eight-run hammer, the Hawks battled back from a 5-0 hole with three runs in the fourth. Abby Kunzman singled and Bailey VerHelst walked. After two outs were recorded, Jessica Riedemann singled to drive in Kunzman, with pinch runner Kinsey Schirmer moving to third. After Gracie Knobloch was hit by a pitch, a passed ball on strike three allowed Cadence Klein to take first and allowed Schirmer to score. Darby Mastbergen’s base hit drove in Riedemann.
HMS plated two in the fifth. Again it was Kunzman leading off and she drew a walk. VerHelst reached on an error. Eliza Tewes knocked in Kunzman with a single. VerHelst scored on an error.
The Hawks got a final run in the seventh. VerHelst singled and pinch runner Abby Otto advanced to second on a wild pitch. Riedemann’s two-bagger brought Otto around to score.
Darby Mastbergen ended up with three hits on the night and Reidemann and Kunzman two apiece. The 10 HMS hits included a single by Knobloch that did not figure in the scoring.
Taya Mason started the game in the pitcher’s circle. Knobloch had a brief stint of relief before Mason re-entered the circle to finish the game. Mason allowed seven runs (two earned) on six hits. She fanned 11 batters and walked four. The seven runs yielded by Knobloch came on three hits, two walks and three hit batters. Six of the runs were earned. There were five HMS errors in the ball game.
