Early Gehlen lead holds up in win over Hawks
Gehlen Catholic hit Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn with six runs in the first two innings and went on to defeat HMS 8-3 June 4 at Le Mars. The loss in the War Eagle Conference contest dropped the Hawks to 1-4 on the season.
HMS did score the game’s final three runs. In the sixth, Gracie Knobloch was on base by way of an error when Darby Mastbergen hit a double. Taya Mason followed that up with a double of her own, knocking in both runners. The Hawk seventh started with back-to-back singles from Cadence Klein and Eliza Tewes. Knobloch’s two-out single scored Klein. HMS recorded only two hits in the first five innings: singles by Elle Mastbergen in the second and Tewes in the fifth. Gehlen’s Rylee Schnepf fanned 13 Hawk batters.
Knobloch got the pitching start for HMS and suffered the loss. In 3-1/3 innings of work she gave up seven runs on eight hits. She walked six batters and struck out two. Mason worked the final 2-2/3 innings yielding one run on two hits with three walks and a strikeout. All the Lady Jays’ runs were earned. Each team committed just one error.
