Winning Trinity gets the key hits the Hawks can’t find

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn entertained Trinity Christian June 2 at Hartley. The ball seemed to bounce the Tigers’ way most of the night and that was reflected in the 11-5 final score in Trinity’s favor. When the visitors hit a ball, it more often than not found the green. When the Hawks hit a ball, it more often than not found a glove.
With 14 left on base, HMS stranded twice as many runners as did the Tigers. “The big hit in scoring situations is still eluding us,” said HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “That is really going to be a key factor in how this season continues to play out for us.”
After Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Hawks tied things up in the third. Dawson Schiphoff walked to lead off the half inning. He came all the way around to score on Jacob Cates’ double.
The Tigers responded with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth to go on top 9-1. HMS tried to get back in the game, scoring four times in the sixth. Nick Bronstad singled to start things off. With one out, Jordan Ortega drew a walk. Schiphoff then singled to load the bases. Cates’ base hit brought in Bronstad. Samuel Heyn then singled to plate Ortega. Ben Haack delivered with a two out base hit, driving in both Schiphoff and courtesy runner Tyson Tessum.
Trinity added two more runs in the seventh on a two-out double. To add salt to the HMS wound, the game ended with the bases full of Hawks.
Cates doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs. Keaton Graves notched three singles but was stranded each time. Haack had two hits and two RBI’s. Ortega, Schiphoff, Heyn, DeBoer and Bronstad each recorded one hit.
Ortega took the mound to start the game. With two on and nobody out in the sixth, he was relieved by Schiphoff. Ortega’s line showed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Schiphoff allowed three earned runs on five hits. He struck out two batters and walked one. There were three errors in the game, two by the Hawks.
Trinity 1 0 0 2 3 3 2 – 11
HMS 0 0 1 0 0 4 0 – 5
