Hinton’s late flurry wraps up win over Hawks
Hinton scored six runs in the sixth inning against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to seal an 11-1 War Eagle Conference win June 9 at Hinton. The Blackhawks had forged a 5-1 advantage with three runs in the first inning and two in the fifth.
“We stuck in it until the sixth,” said HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “Things unraveled a little for us and Hinton capitalized.”
The Hawks scored their run in the third inning to cut into the 3-0 Hinton lead. Trenton Vollink drew a base-on-balls. He was scored on a double off the bat of Keaton Graves. That RBI two-bagger proved to be the only HMS hit. There were just two other baserunners for the Hawks. Nick Bronstad coaxed a walk and Jordan Ortega was hit by a pitch. Glen Carlson pitched all six innings for the Blackhawks.
HMS starting pitcher Jordan Ortega went 5-1/3 innings. He gave up nine runs on 11 hits. Eight of the runs were earned. Ortega struck out five batters and walked three. Ben Haack pitched 1/3 of an inning and yielded the two runs (one earned) that ended the game. He allowed one hit and walked a pair of batters.
