Hawks’ offensive woes continue in loss to Unity Christian

For the second game in a row, the frigid Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn bats produced only one hit. This time it was Unity Christian putting the Hawk sticks in the deep freeze as the Knights beat HMS 16-0 June 11 at Hartley. Unity scored eight runs in the sixth, which proved to be the final inning of the War Eagle Conference match up.
The solitary Hawk hit came from Dawson Schiphoff in the very first inning. It was famine for the offense after that. HMS was retired in order in every subsequent inning, save for the fifth. In that frame, Samuel Heyn reached base on an error but was forced at second on a ball hit by Ben Haack. Keith DeBoer was hit by a pitch before two strikeouts closed out the inning.
A pair of pitchers dealt the damage for the Knights. Clayton Bosma cruised through five innings before giving way to Cole Rens.
Getting the starting nod for the Hawks was Haack. His 3-2/3 innings of work yielded six earned runs on eight hits. He walked three batters, hit three and struck out one. Dawson Schiphoff came on in relief to pitch the final 2-1/3 innings. He allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
Unity 2 0 2 2 2 8 – 16
