Hawks victimized by another big inning in loss to West Sioux
Another inning where an opponent hung a crooked number on the scoreboard hurt Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. West Sioux scored six runs in the third inning and went on to beat the Hawks 10-5 in a War Eagle Conference game played June 18 at Hartley.
Down 8-0, HMS tried to mount a comeback, starting with two runs in the bottom of the third. Trentin Vollink reached base on an error and was awarded second on a balk call. Keith DeBoer singled him to third and he scored on Dawson Schiphoff’s RBI single. Consecutive fielder’s choice plays moved DeBoer around to score with Samuel Heyn getting the RBI.
After neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings, the Falcons regained their eight-point cushion with single runs in the sixth and seventh. In the bottom of the seventh HMS made a last ditch attempt to rally. The top of the order led off the frame and Schiphoff drew a walk. For the third time in the game, Jordan Ortega was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. They weren’t there long as Heyn belted a triple to score both Schiphoff and pinch runner Ethan Diehm. Heyn then scored on the error that put Jacob Cates aboard. The next three batters were retired to end the threat and the game.
Heyn was 2-for-4 with the triple and three RBI’s. The singles by Schiphoff and DeBoer filled out the Hawk hit total of four.
Ortega went six innings in taking the loss. He yielded nine runs on nine hits with four strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters. Just three of the runs were earned. Ben Haack came on in relief to begin the seventh inning. He gave up one earned run on one hit while walking one batter and hitting one. There were five HMS errors in the game.
