Errors hamper Hawks in loss to Gehlen
Seven Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn errors contributed to six unearned runs for Gehlen Catholic as the Jays picked up a 12-0 War Eagle Conference win in six innings June 16 at Hartley. Gehlen pitcher Rylee Schnepf retired the Hawks in order in five of the six innings.
“The girls came out and made a few errors the first inning,” said HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “I had moved a few players due to injuries and the nerves hurt us. After the first inning they fought tough for two innings but couldn’t get the bats going. Taya (Mason) pitched a great game but unfortunately, they hit the ball well and we didn’t execute our offense and defense like we needed too.”
Mason’s six innings included 10 hits allowed. She walked three batters and struck out two.
The two Hawk hits came in the fifth inning. With two outs Gracie Knobloch reached base on an error. Consecutive singles by Eliza Tewes and Ally Klein loaded the bases. The Jays went home with the throw on Abby Kunzman’s grounder to force out Knobloch and end the threat.
