Top-ranked Boyden-Hull downs Hawk boys
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn traveled to Hull January 28 to accept the challenge of taking on the number one team in Class 2A. The Hawks battled Boyden-Hull throughout, but in the end the Comets improved to 16-0 with a 72-50 win over HMS.
The Hawks made 20 of their 50 field goal attempts to shoot 40 percent. Boyden-Hull’s 48 percent mark was accomplished on 26-of-54 shooting. Coincidentally, each team was 7-of-19 from behind the three-point line. The same was not true at the other line. The Comets sank 13 of 15 free throw tries compared to 3 of 4 for HMS.
The visitors got 11 points from Sam Heyn, 10 from both Kooper Ebel and Lance Berends, seven from Kayl Jacobsma, five from Ben Haack, four from Keevyn Jacobsma and three from Jorden Ortega. The 17 Hawk assists included seven from Ebel and three each from Haack and Kayl Jacobsma.
HMS was out-rebounded 29-22 despite the nine boards from Berends. The two steals from both Heyn and Haack contributed to Boyden-Hull’s total of 12 turnovers. The Hawks turned the ball over 13 times. Haack blocked a pair of shots.
