Meet the HMS Homecoming King and Queen Candidates

Homecoming Week is October 4-8 at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. A King and Queen will be crowned at the Coronation Ceremony held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the new gym at the high school.
Following are brief bios on this year’s candidates:
Megan Ten Kley is the daughter of Heather and Shane Ten Kley of Hartley. She is a member of the cheer squad for football and basketball and is on the golf team. Her favorite thing about school has been going to National and State FFA Conventions and her best memory from school is meeting new people at those FFA Conventions. Megan plans to attend college to become an Early Childhood Eduacation teacher.
Wyatt Borden is the son of Ruth and Scott Borden of Sanborn. He is involved in football, basketball, golf, baseball, student council and FCA. Wyatt says his favorite things about school are the 3:20 bell and the bus rides back from games. His best memories from school are all the times hanging with the boys, sports, and being menaces in public with his cronies. Wyatt’s future plans are to attend NCC and pursue a degree in accounting.
Jasmine Lux is the daughter of Tricia and Jake Elgersma and Mathias and Laura Lux and calls Sanborn and Hartley home. Her involvements include volleyball, basketball, track, dance, band, jazz band, choir, jazz choir, solo-ensemble, BPA, FCA and NHS. Saying “Hi” or making faces to people in the hallway and making them smile is Jasmine’s favorite thing about school. Her best memory from HMS is accidentally setting off the fire alarm with a smoke machine for the Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event. Jasmine plans to go to college for her bachelor degree in biology and then get her DVM to be a zoo veterinarian.
Mason Brinkman is the son of Tim and Anne Brinkman of Sanborn. He is involved in football, basketball, track and National Honor Society. Mason listed goofing around with friends as his favorite thing about school and messing with friends as his best school memory. His future plans include attending college for Business Management.
Kaley Pearson is the daughter of Jeremy and Trisha Pearson of Hartley. Her activities include volleyball, golf, band, jazz band and National Honor Society. At school she most enjoyed being around her peers and teachers. Kaley’s favorite memory is losing to Anna in a game of spoons during Spanish class. She plans to attend Kirkwood Community College to get her degree in Dental Hygiene.
Nick Bronstad is the son of Stephanie and Gary Bronstad of Hartley. He has been involved in football, wrestling, golf, baseball, Quiz Bowl, National Honor Society, Student Council and FFA. Nick’s favorite thing is spending time with his friends and his best memory is making it to State Wrestling with the support of the whole school. Among his future plans is to wrestle at the college level but he is undecided on the college.
Anna Vander Veen is the daughter of Steven and Melissa Vander Veen of Hartley. Activities in which she is involved are National Honor Society, Student Council, FFA, FCA, Lutheran Youth Fellowship, band, jazz band, Dance Attack, football and basketball cheer, track and tumbling. Anna says getting to see everyone every day and socializing is her favorite thing about school. She reports that her best memory is seeing people’s reactions to her eating a full rack of ribs at both State FFA and State Track. Attending the University of Iowa for Radiology is in Anna’s future plans.
Connor Dodd is the son of Chris and Tammy Dodd of Hartley. Football, track and NHS are the activities in which he is involved. Connor’s favorite thing about school is hanging out with friends. He selected as his best memory the Romeo & Juliet play in English 9 with Doug DeGroot. Connor’s future plans are to play football in college and hopefully graduate with a good job and no debt.
Lydia Harders is the daughter of Brenda Harders of Hartley. Her activities include football cheer, Dance Attack, basketball, track and field, FFA, FCA, NHS, band and flags. Spanish Class with Ms. Dulin rates as her favorite thing about school. Lydia’s best memory from school involves dressing up as “Tiger King” with Anna and Emma and getting their photo shoot posted on the school website last homecoming. Her future plans include pre-med at Central College.
Jesse Garcia is the son of Bryan Rawlings and Jenny Morataya of Hartley. He has been involved in track and football at HMS. His favorite thing has been watching Connor and Nick’s bromance during school. Jesse’s best memory is getting lit in track with Coach Borchers and the track team. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or Iowa State University.
