HMS School Board Candidates Introduction
Scott Vollink
Scott Vollink is the only ballot candidate for that area. District 5 is primarily rural southeastern HMS and the eastern portion of the city of Hartley.
Scott’s family reside in Hartley. He is a Senior Sales Estimator for Morton Buildings, Inc. Scott has been employed there for 19 years. He is married to Becky and they have four children ranging from 4-16 years of age. They stay very busy cheering for the HMS Hawks as their kids are involved in many different HMS activities.
Scott enjoys woodworking, yardwork and general maintenance projects. Their family enjoys fishing, swimming and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes together!
Wben asked to explain his leadership experience: professional, civic, governmental. Include achievements Sxott had this to say.
“I have been on the HMS school board for eight years. I have also served as a deacon in
our church for a couple of years. As a school board member, I have served on the personnel and building/ground committees. I have been the Iowa Association of School Board delegate for the past few years. I have also attended many of their training workshops and meetings as well.”
He describes his motivation to seek election as a School Board Candidate.
“We currently have children in all three of our buildings. I enjoy working with the school leadership teams and being engaged in our future ’s education.I would like to continue to be involved in making sound decisions for our district.”
Scott spoke on as a school board member and explain a policy, program, procedure, regulation, ordinance or other that you believe needs to be reinforced, eliminated or changed in some way. Describe your idea to reinforce or change.
“I believe there are two vital entities of our school system that should always be reinforced. First, providing the best education and opportunities for our students. We exist to serve our children and to educate leaders for future generations. We want to continue to build on our school ’s growth and sustain HMS long into the future.Second, our financial strength and attention to our budget. It is our role as a school board to use our patrons tax dollars wisely and for the betterment of the district.”
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn has no candidate on the ballot. District 2 is primarily the western half of the City of Hartley. If no write-in candidate becomes a clear winner the school board may appoint or hold a special election.
Chad Lyman
Chad Lyman of Sanborn is the only District 3 candidate for HMS School District. District 3 is the city of Melvin, and the rural areas north and west. District 3 also includes rural areas surrounding Sanborn in all directions. District 3 is a large western geographical area of the school district.
Randy is married to Rhonda, They have two daughters Morgan and Jayden.
He works as a Trailer Mechanic at Van Hof Trucking in Sanborn. Randy enjoys golfing, bowling, going racing, and Morningside football.

He describes his motivation to seek election as a School Board Candidate. “I want to keep improving education experience and keep buildings going in the right direction by not falling behind on maintenance”
