Foul-prone Hawks lose to Akron-Westfield girls

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn closed out its home schedule February 5 by hosting Akron-Westfield in a War Eagle Conference match-up at Hartley. The Westerners used a big edge at the free throw line to top the HMS girls 57-35. The loss dropped the Hawks to 2-7 in the conference and 4-16 overall.
HMS was whistled for 21 fouls in the game and saw two players foul out. Akron-Westfield capitalized by going 20-of-25 at the free throw line. The Hawks were 4-of-15 at the stripe.
There were 60 shots put up by HMS but the Hawks made just 14 of them (23 percent). The Westerners managed 18 field goals in 46 tries to shoot 39 percent. HMS was 3-of-11 from behind the three-point line while A-W was 1-of-12.
Darby Mastbergen led the Hawks in scoring with 12 points. She was followed by Taya Mason with nine points, Lydia Harders with seven and Olivia Grooters with three. Scoring two points apiece were Paige Gehrke and Jasmine Lux.
Five steals, including two by Grooters, contributed to the Westerners’ total of 25 turnovers. HMS turned the ball over 19 times. Harders accounted for 11 of the Hawks’ 26 rebounds. Mason gathered in six caroms.
