Hawk turnovers turn into a big win for Gehlen girls
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn turned the ball over 40 times in its match-up with Gehlen Catholic, helping the Jays to get a total of 67 shots at the basket. Gehlen made 30 of those and came away with a 72-41 War Eagle Conference win December 17 at Le Mars.
The Jays produced 45 percent shooting for the game. HMS was well below that at 31 percent. The Hawks finished with 14 baskets in 45 attempts. They put up only four three-point shots, making two. HMS was 11-of-21 from the free throw line. The Jays hit five of their 14 tries from long range and made seven of 10 charity tosses.
The HMS scoring showed Lydia Harders with 13 points, Jasmine Lux and Kylee Schiphoff each with 11, Emily Mutombo and Emily Otto with two apiece and Abby Douma and Frankie Mohni each with one. Lux registered a pair of assists.
The Hawks managed 13 takeaways with four steals courtesy of Mutombo and three by way of Harders. Gehlen was guilty of 27 turnovers. The 20 HMS rebounds included five each from Lux, Douma and Schiphoff.
