Fast start carries Harris-Lake Park past Hawk boys
Harris-Lake Park led wire-to-wire in dealing Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn a 74-59 setback January 7 at Lake Park. The loss dropped HMS to 1-3 in the War Eagle Conference and 3-6 overall.
The Wolves held a 16-point lead late in first quarter but HMS cut the deficit to six. The halftime score was 36-28. The Hawks were able to trim one point off the HLP lead in the third quarter. The Wolves provided no opening in the final frame as the teams battled on even terms.
Lance Berends poured in a season-high 34 points to keep the Hawks in the game. Travis Kamradt took up the scoring slack created by the absence of Kooper Ebel. The junior went 6-for-10 from three-point range to finish with 18 points. Keevyn Jacobsma added seven points, Mason Brinkman five and Jordan Ortega three. The 13 assists included four from Brinkman, and three from both Kamradt and Berends.

HLP put up 60 shots and made 28 to shoot 47 percent. The Hawks went 23-of-46 from the field for an even 50 percent. HMS made 10 of 23 three-point attempts and 11 of 19 free throws. The Wolves were 3-of-8 from long distance and 15-of-31 at the foul line.
Berends’ contributions to the Hawk effort included 16 rebounds and two blocked shots. Jacobsma grabbed five rebounds. Kamradt added two steals and two blocked shots. The turnover totals showed the Wolves with nine and HMS with 13.
