Fresh HMS faces experience loss to Cherokee
Some Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn arms unaccustomed to the mound had a chance to throw some innings as the Hawks played a weekend non-conference baseball game at Cherokee on June 4. The results were mixed as the Braves from the Lakes Conference downed HMS 13-1, dropping the visitors’ record to 2-5.
“We had a couple of guys gone for family events, so we had some young guys filling in and gaining some valuable experience,” explained Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “We also gave some guys a chance on the pitching mound to see what they could do for us. Tanner Tesch started on the mound for us, but struggled to find the zone. Trenton Vollink came in and gave us a solid 2-2/3 innings of relief. Evan Eilers also saw his first varsity mound action. The bats struggled again. We only managed two singles from Bradley Van Beek and Eilers.”
In 2/3 of an inning Tesch gave up nine runs on two hits, five walks and a hit batter. Just three of the runs were earned. Vollink struck out two batters and hit one. The three runs (one earned) came on three hits. Eilers pitched an inning and allowed an earned run on one hit. He also walked two batters. HMS committed a half dozen errors.
The Hawks’ very first batter scored their lone run. Vollink walked and stole second. Two passed balls later, he was crossing home plate. Jacob Cates also walked in the first inning. The base hits from Van Beek and Eilers both came in the fifth inning.
