Hawk girls use second quarter outburst to top South O’Brien
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn exploded for 24 points in the second quarter and then held off a pesky South O’Brien team to win 57-50 February 7 at Paullina. The victory in the Hawks’ final regular season game allowed the team to improve to 2-8 in the War Eagle Conference and 3-17 overall.
HMS held a narrow 12-11 lead after one quarter of play. The Hawks scored the first four points and the last seven points of the second quarter to take a 36-20 halftime lead. HMS won that second frame 24-9.
The Wolverine shooters found the range in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to five points in the final minute. HMS was able to push the lead back up to 10 before South O’Brien hit a trey at the buzzer.
The Hawks outshot their hosts 37 percent (19-of-51) to 28 percent (17-of-61) but committed 25 turnovers compared to 18 for South O’Brien. Each team popped in five three-pointers and attempted 25 free throws. HMS made 14 of its charity tosses while the Wolverines converted 11.
Leading the way, points-wise, were Kylee Schiphoff with 22, Moriah Otto with 14 and Elise Haack with 10. Abby Douma and Eliza Tewes scored four points apiece and Emily Mutombo added three. Haack recorded two assists, Schiphoff and Gracie Knobloch one each.
The 39 Hawk rebounds included 10 from Otto, nine from Mutombo, seven from Haack, five each from Schiphoff and Tewes and three from Douma. The lone blocked shot also went to Douma. Mutombo made three steals. Notching one steal apiece were Haack, Douma, Otto, Knobloch and Frankie Mohni.
