Sanborn Community Gardens to turn the soil on a sixth season

The Sanborn Community Gardens will celebrate a sixth year of growing this summer, and the gardeners want to invite and encourage the citizens of Sanborn to join them for this new season. There are several plots that will be open for new gardeners to take advantage of the space; there are several Master Gardeners who are willing to help other gardeners get started or try new ideas; and there is the satisfaction of providing for your family and friends from the work of your own hands.
Part of the development of a Community Garden for Sanborn was rooted in the desire O’Brien County Master Gardeners had to establish a donation garden. The Donation Garden occupies six plots in the community gardens space, and is tended each year by at least three Master Gardeners and additional Iowa State Extension and Outreach interns. Additional volunteers to work with the Master Gardeners are always welcome to join them in producing nearly five hundred pounds of produce each summer that has been donated to Upper Des Moines Opportunity and to Love In The Name of Christ of Greater O’Brien County.
The Sanborn Community Gardens are located on Eastern Avenue, just south of the parking lot of the Cornerstone United Reformed Church. The space for the gardens is donated for use from the Cornerstone United Reformed Church, and access to water for the gardens is provided by the City of Sanborn.
Anyone interested in renting a ten foot by twenty foot plot for the 2023 growing season may email Sanborn.Community.Garden@gmail.com or contact the Sanborn City Office for an application form. Plot rental is $20.00 for each, and half of that may be refunded at the end of the growing season and once your plot or plots have been cleared for the winter.
It would be great to see you in the garden this year!
