Gehlen boys keep record spotless with win over Hawk golfers
The Gehlen Catholic boys golfers moved to 3-0 in the War Eagle Conference by picking up a 180-210 victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The April 18 dual was hosted by Sanborn Golf and Country Club.
The Jays claimed all four medals. Jack Mastbergen shot a 51 to record the low round for the Hawks. Right on his heels were Lucas Kroese with a 51, Blake Meendering with a 53 and Charlie Conway with a 54. Slayton McCarter turned in a round of 63.
“We haven’t played the best we are capable of to this point,” observed HMS coach Mark Japenga. “We do a nice job of battling the adversity, but we need to get better at staying focused and making good decisions in managing the course. The kids work at their game and will get better. The weather has been difficult, but we recognize it has been difficult for everyone.”
Team scores: Gehlen 180, HMS 210
Medalists (all from Gehlen): 1st, Landen Rueter, 42; 2nd, Dawson Barthole, 45; 3rd, Landen Kneip, 45; 4th, Gabe Wiltgen, 48.
HMS varsity scores: Jack Mastbergen 51, Lucas Kroese 52, Blake Meendering 53, Charlie Conway 54, Slayton McCarter 63.
