Akron-Westfield outlasts Hawks
Akron-Westfield scored eight runs in the final three innings to defeat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 10-6 June 5 at Hartley. Of the five runs the Westerners tallied in the sixth and seventh innings combined, only one was earned.
HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad described the War Eagle Conference contest as a “tough fought game.” She added, “We hit the ball well but their speed on the bases and bunting got the best of us.”
Both teams scored a first-inning run, then Akron-Westfield added another run in the second. Two tallies in the fourth put the Hawks up 3-2. In the fifth inning the Westerners scored three times and HMS twice, knotting the game at 5-5. The Hawks added one final run in the sixth.
Kinsey Schirmer singled and scored in the first and doubled in a run in the sixth. It was a base hit from Eliza Tewes that drove in Schirmer and Tewes singled and scored in the fifth.
The fourth inning saw Cadence Klein, Abby Kunzman and Delaney Murphy all record singles. Kunzman knocked in Klein and Murphy plated Kunzman. In the fifth it was Addy Sheeler who singled home Tewes and Frankie Mohni who plated Sheeler. Mohni also had a base hit in the seventh. Abby Otto singled in the sixth and scored on the Schirmer double. That’s 11 hits for the Hawks compared to 10 for Akron-Westfield.
Gracie Knobloch allowed those 10 hits along with six earned runs. Her line also showed seven innings pitched, nine strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. HMS committed four errors and the Westerners three. Akron-Westfield left eight runners on base while the Hawks stranded seven.
