Hawks begin well but Gehlen ends up with 3-0 win
Despite a good start, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn dropped its War Eagle Conference volleyball opener to Gehlen Catholic 3-0 August 29 at Hartley. Set scores for the Jays were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.
The Hawks roared out to a 12-5 lead in the opening set. “One of our goals this year is to come out strong in each match,” shared HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “I was proud of how the girls came out Tuesday night. They were ready to play.”
After catching their breath, Gehlen’s players stormed back to tie things up 13-all. The Jays moved out to a 21-16 lead that HMS trimmed to 21-18. Gehlen scored the final four points to capture the set.
In set two the Hawks held the advantage for much of the early going. Gehlen claimed the lead at 11-10 and never relinquished it. HMS was within two points at 16-14 before the Jays finished strongly to go up 2-0 in sets.
Gehlen carried that momentum into the third set, taking an early 6-2 lead. HMS closed to within a point at 6-5 but the Jays extended their lead to ten points at 19-9. The Hawks were unable to make any real cuts into the lead as Gehlen went on to win the set and the match.
“We struggled a bit creating our own errors,” noted Kroese. “This is something we are working hard to correct. We need to put pressure on ourselves each night at practice ball control and eliminate those types of costly errors. This is a great bunch of ladies who will work hard to make that happen.”
Kylee Schiphoff produced nine kills and Abby Douma five. They accounted for all but two of the team’s kills. Mohni notched 14 set assists and Kinsey Schirmer two.
HMS got 11 digs from Abigail Otto, eight from Moriah Otto and seven from Eliza Tewes. Schiphoff and Mohni combined for a block. The pair also served three aces apiece. Schirmer was 9-for-9 serving.
