HMS girls hang on to beat Harris-Lake Park

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn faced a late assault from Harris-Lake Park on the road but refused to relinquish the lead. The Hawks came away with a 39-34 War Eagle Conference victory January 5 at Lake Park to improve to 2-3 in the conference and move to 6-5 on the season.
HMS jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed in the game. The Hawks were up by eight again early in the final quarter but the Wolves trimmed the lead to a deuce at 36-34 with four minutes remaining. That was still the score when Kylee Schiphoff nailed a three-pointer with 1:40 left to put HMS up by five. Each team had multiple opportunities to improve its chances to win but that margin held up for the Hawks.
The Wolves shot just 20 percent for the game with 11 buckets in 56 attempts. HMS was 14-of-44 from the field for 32 percent. There were six three-point baskets for the Hawks and five for Harris-Lake Park. The Wolves sank seven of their 12 free throw tries while HMS was 5-of-19 at the foul line.
Schiphoff’s 17 points included four treys. Moriah Otto scored 11 points while Frankie Mohni and Lindsey Van Es each made a three-pointer. Gracie Knobloch and Abby Douma added two points apiece. Eliza Tewes hit a free throw for one point and also contributed a team-high three assists.
Otto’s 13 rebounds helped give HMS a slight edge in that category. Mohni made five steals, Douma four and Schiphoff three as the Hawks again totaled 16. Douma blocked three shots and Schiphoff two. The turnover totals showed HMS with 21 and the Wolves with 17.
