Sanborn Community Garden may have fewer gardeners this season

Several gardeners from the Sanborn Community Garden met at the Sanborn Public Library on January 29 to discuss the coming growing season and the possibilities for the community garden that is located on Eastern Street, just south of the Cornerstone United Reformed Church.
With seven gardeners in attendance and one joining via Zoom, the discussion focused on anticipating fewer possible gardeners for the 2024 growing season, weed control and management, and how to manage composting for the benefit of all gardeners. The conversation was creative, and as a group the gardeners are looking forward to allowing some of the plots to “rest” with a cover crop to help control weeds. It was also concluded that until there were more people to take the responsibility to appropriately attend to a composting space, all gardeners would be expected to manage and dispose of their own weeds. For now, the composting unit will be deconstructed.
New gardeners are always welcome to participate at the Community Garden, and applications for plots will be available after March 1. The next meeting for Sanborn Community Gardeners is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sanborn Public Library. All who have an interest in gardening are welcome.
