June 4 Primary Election features contested races on the Republican ballot
The Primary Election in O’Brien County will be held on Tuesday, June 4 for the purpose of nominating Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican candidates for Federal, State and County Offices for the General Election.
The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There is a change in the polling place for Franklin Precinct, which includes the City of Sanborn. Yesterday’s Memories Museum, 106 Eastern St. in Sanborn, has been established as the new polling location for all residents in the City of Sanborn and Franklin Township. This replaces the Sanborn Community Building. Registered voters in the precinct were mailed notices citing the change.
On Primary Election Day, voters will cast either a Democratic, Libertarian or Republican ballot. Voters must be registered as, or declare at the polls, a party of either Democratic, Libertarian, or Republican to vote in the Primary Election. Only the candidates for that party will appear on the ballot.
There are several contested races on the Republican ballot.
For U.S. Representative – District 4, incumbent Randy Feenstra is facing a challenge from Kevin Virgil. Ryan Melton is unopposed on the Democratic ballot.
The three current O’Brien County Supervisors whose terms expire this year are each being opposed on the Republican ballot. In District 1, incumbent Timothy Overmire faces Jim Thomas. In District 2, incumbent John Steensma is being challenged by Barbara Rohwer. The District 3 race is between incumbent Nancy McDowell and challenger Shanelle Matus.
Also on the Republican Ballot at the County level are Rhea Schmalen for County Auditor and incumbent Bruce Devereaux for County Sheriff.
There are no Democratic or Libertarian candidates for O’Brien County offices. The same is true for State Representative – District 5 where the current office holder, Zachary M. Dieken, is running unopposed on the Republican ballot.
