Samuel Heyn wins KIWA scholarship
Samuel Heyn has been named the winner of a $1500 scholarship from KIWA Radio in Sheldon. Although born in Sheldon, Heyn is a life-long resident of Sanborn.
The senior at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn plans to attend the University of Iowa to major in journalism and mass communications with a minor in statistics. His goal is to be a sports broadcaster for a news network. Heyn is aiming high as he says his primary focus at this point is ESPN.
Sports is an integral part of Heyn’s life as he shared that he likes to “enjoy time with my friends” and “go on my phone a lot like most teenagers. And sometimes I really like to play sports as well.”
Heyn was selected from among the numerous applicants for the scholarship. When asked how he felt when he got the news, the scholarship recipient replied, “I was actually very excited. I woke up this morning to my phone vibrating right next to my pillow and next thing, you know, I open it and it’s from Sheldon and I open it and there it is. The guy says I won $1,500. I was so excited I jumped out of bed.”
Heyn has been a four-sport athlete all through high school and has maintained a 3.99 grade point average. He says he is “thankful for this opportunity.”
