Hawk boys’ well-rounded effort crushes Harris-Lake Park
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn excelled on both ends of the court to hand Harris-Lake Park a 69-36 defeat January 5 at Hartley. The non-conference matchup marked the return from the holiday break for each team.
Field goal accuracy was a reflection of the way the game played out. HMS connected on 28 of 51 shots for 55 percent. The Wolves were held to 27 percent shooting with 13 makes in 48 tries. Only three of Harris-Lake Park’s 21 three-point tries found the mark.
“Great defensive effort on the night,” commented Hawk head coach Mark Petersen. “We were very patient on offense and got a lot of easy shots due to our patience. We have to keep improving our rebounding and a few rotation issues on defense, but overall a great performance by my guys!”
The balanced HMS scoring showed Kayl Jacobsma with 14 points, Lance Berends with 13, Ben Haack with 11, Sam Heyn with nine, Kooper Ebel with six and DJ Doyle with five. Jordan Ortega, Keevyn Jacobsma and Wyatt Borden each scored three points with Dawson Schiphoff tallying two points. The 23 assists included five from Ebel and four from Ortega.
The Hawks were 7-of-17 from beyond the three-point arc and 6-of-8 at the free throw line. The Wolves connected on just 7 of 19 charity tosses.
HMS owned a 34-15 advantage on the boards. Berends claimed nine caroms and Kayl Jacobsma collected eight. Haack and Ebel each came away with four steals. Turnovers were even at 16 apiece.
