Okoboji/HMS finally gets to the mat for double dual at Sibley
Okoboji/HMS made up a wrestling double dual January 25 at Sibley. The event was originally scheduled for January 14 but postponed due to the inclement weather. The Pioneers defeated host Sibley-Ocheyedan 52-30 but lost to Sheldon/South O’Brien 54-21. The split gives Okoboji/HMS a 9-18 duals record this season.
HMS wrestlers competing were Nick Bronstad, Chayton Faulkner Bryce Dodge, Jonathan Ortiz and Mitchell Meyers.
Bronstad won a 6-2 decision over Sheldon/South O’Brien heavyweight Luis Martinez. Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Trevor Doeden took Bronstad into the third period before Bronstad got the pin in 5:26.
Faulkner received a win by forfeit in the dual with the Generals. His Sheldon/South O’Brien opponent at 170 pounds, Mason Warnke, pinned Faulkner in 1:53.
Dodge lost twice by fall at 145. He fell victim to the Orabs’ Cason Johannes in :52 and to Garrett Sarringer of Sibley-Ocheyedan in 3:44.
At 138 pounds Ortiz also was pinned twice. Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Eddie Millan ended the match in :47. Ortiz went longer against the Generals’ Grant Paca before falling in 2:26.
Meyers wrestled three exhibition matches. He pinned Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Rex Ross in 2:52 but the Orabs’ Zach Brinkman turned the tables, pinning Meyers in 2:19. Meyers and Keegan DeZeeuw of Sibley-Ocheyedan wrestled deep into the third period before DeZeeuw won by fall in 5:47.
