Crash northwest of Sanborn results in injury and damages
A crash last week involving two pickups and a semi sent emergency responders to an intersection three miles west and two miles north of Sanborn. The call to the intersection of county blacktop L-40 (Pierce Avenue) and 300th Street was received around 12:45 p.m. April 14.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1995 Chevrolet K1500 pickup, driven by 63-year-old Mark Allen Van Beek of Sanborn was westbound on 300th Street and allegedly failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Pierce Avenue. The pickup collided with the left rear of a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 24-year-old Gerardo Leanos-Ruvalcabe of Rock Valley, who was southbound on Pierce Avenue. The impact then reportedly spun the Leanos-Ruvalcabe pickup into the left front section of a 2015 Freightliner Semi, which was stopped, facing north on L-40 and waiting to turn onto 300th Street. The semi, owned by Wilson Bros., Inc. of Primghar, was driven by 38-year-old Nathan Lee Holtz of Sanborn.
The Van Beek pickup came to rest in the southwest quadrant of the intersection and struck a utility pole owned by Northwest REC. Leanos-Ruvalcabe’s pickup came to rest in the west ditch.
The report indicated that a passenger in the Leanos-Ruvalcaba truck was transported by Sanborn Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of injuries and that another passenger in the vehicle complained of injuries but wasn’t taken to the hospital.
Van Beek was reportedly cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign and Yield Right Of Way.
Estimates placed the damage to Van Beek’s pickup at $4,000, damage to the Holtz semi at $10,000 and damage to Leanos-Ruvalcabe’s pickup at $10,000. The damage to the utility pole was estimated at $3,500.
