HMS takes part in Unity Invite and Spencer Girls Meet
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls track and field teams competed twice last week, at the Unity Christian Coed Invitational April 12 at Northwestern College in Orange City and the Spencer Girls Meet April 16 at Spencer.
At Unity, the Hawks began the meet with a win in the sprint medley relay. The team of freshman Emily Mutombo, junior Anna VanderVeen, freshman Abby Otto and junior Jasmine Lux won first place in a time of 2:01.02.
Besides their win in the sprint medley, the Hawks recorded four runner up finishes. Mutombo was second in the 200-meter dash (29.18), and VanderVeen was the runner up in the 400 meter hurdles (76.90). Also in second was the 4×800 relay of junior Madison Otto, VanderVeen, junior Lydia Harders and Lux (11:20.72), and the distance medley team of Mutombo, Abby Otto, Lux and junior Madison Otto (4:52.16).
Finishing in fourth was freshman Lexi Croatt in the 3,000 meter run (13:06.73). In fifth was Madison Otto in the 1,500 meter run (6:04.14) and Harders in the 400 meter dash (71.63). The 4×100 relay of Mutombo, Harders, Abby Otto and Lux finished sixth (57.49).
At Spencer, highlights included a third- and fourth-place finish in the 3,000 meter run by Madison Otto (12:42.37) and Croatt (12:44.53). Otto and Croatt also finished fourth (5:55.34) and sixth (6:04.02) in the 1,500-meter run.
In the 400 meter dash, Lux finished second (1:04.10) and Abby Otto third (1:07.27). The team of Mutombo, VanderVeen, Abby Otto, and Lux finished fourth in the sprint medley relay (2:03.30) as did the 4×100 relay of Mutombo, Emily Otto, Abby Otto and Lux (56.23). VanderVeen finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:21.39). Mutombo was fourth in the 100 meter dash (14.15).
HMS head coach Nicole Dorhout said the squad had some bright spots. “Lexi Croatt has been improving tremendously in the 3,000,” she said. “She continues to get better and better. The sprint medley team has consistently been placing, and Jasmine Lux and Abigail Otto have been sprinting well. Anna VanderVeen has stepped up in the hurdles and shown some real grit.”
The Hawks are preparing for their own Hawk Relays on Friday, April 23. Fans are encouraged to come out and see the action. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m., with running events beginning at 4:30.
