Most residents are aware that the new Water Treatment Plant has been substantially completed and is currently supplying all of Sanborn with water. Residents should notice a significant improvement in their water quality and hardness. If you have a water softener, please consider adjusting it to cycle less frequently. The new water is softer than what most softeners can produce, and some might find they no longer need to run their water through a softener at all. This is a great improvement for our community, and we are happy to be hearing a lot of great feedback from citizens and business owners!
The City Council and City Administrator looked closely at several rate options and strived to select an option with the least impact to customers, while still being able to effectively operate and maintain the Water Treatment Plant. Below you will see the old rate structure as well as the new rate structure which will go into effect with your upcoming utility bill.
Old Rates: Monthly Meter Charge – $15.00 monthly
Irrigation Meter Charge – $8.00 monthly Water Usage Rate – $3.25 per 1,000 gallons
Irrigation Usage Rate – $3.50 per 1,000 gallons
New Rates: Monthly Meter Charge – $25.00 monthly
Irrigation Meter Charge – $8.00 monthly (unchanged) Water Usage Rate -$5.00 per 1,000 gallons
Irrigation Usage Rate – $5.00 per 1,000 gallons
The average water customer uses roughly 5,000 gallons of water per month. Under the old rate structure, their water bill would have been around $31.25 per month. Under the new rate structure, their water bill will be around $50.00 per month.
Fortunately, the new rates are still coming in under the average rates for area communities.

Osceola Rural Water: $58.84 (Minimum Monthly Charge: $32.74 Usage: $5.22 per 1,000 gal.)
Lyon & Sioux Rural: $54.50 (Minimum Monthly Charge: $32.00 Usage: $4.50 per 1,000 gal.)
Hartley:
$54.25 (Minimum Monthly Charge: $20.50 Usage: $6.75 per 1,000 gal.)
Spencer: $56.75 (Minimum Monthly Charge: $28.00 Usage: $5.75 per 1,000 gal.)
