Longtime Sanborn business undergoes ownership change
Harry’s Motor has changed hands but the hands of a Bosma will still be involved.
The Sanborn automotive parts business was purchased July 1 by John M. Vander Haag. In an letter to the Harry’s Motor customers, Vander Haag said the process has begun of “integrating all the brands and parts you have supported for many years with the Sanborn Hardware, Appliance and Rental business.”
Harry’s Motor was opened by Harry Bosma in 1944 and has been in its present location since 1945. In 1989 he turned the business over to his sons, Larry and Jerry. Customers were invited to stop in for refreshments on June 30 and to congratulate the Bosma brothers on their 32 years of business ownership.
A large new addition to the present Sanborn Hardware building is now being erected to house the automotive parts business. Construction on that building is expected to reach completion early next year. Vander Haag said that, until the new building is ready, plans are to continue operating at the present Harry’s Motor location. He is asking customers to welcome Justin Van Tol as Justin works with Larry Bosma and longtime Harry’s Motor associate Bill Stallman in the transition.
Larry said the time was right for the sale. “We are at the age where we want to slow down and found someone interested in buying,” said Bosma. “We wanted the business to stay in town and John wanted that also. It was an easy decision to make.”
Bosma has seen many changes over the years. He says the greatest of those have come about as the result of technological advancements. “The biggest changes are technology related from the way we look up and bill parts to the technology on vehicles today,” Bosma remarked.
People have made the piloting the business a pleasure for Bosma through the years. “The most enjoyable thing in operating a business is the people you deal with every day,” stated Bosma. “Over the years many of those people have become good friends.” The former owner added, “Sanborn is a great town to do business in.”
