Two huge innings power Hawks past Storm Lake St. Mary’s
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn pounded out 13 hits in blasting Storm Lake St. Mary’s 14-4 in five innings July 5 at Hartley. The Hawks did all of their damage in just two innings with a six-run second and an eight-run third. The Panthers, from the Twin Lakes Conference, plated single runs in the second and third innings and two more in the fourth.
Samuel Heyn enjoyed a 3-for-3 night at the plate with a double in the first, an RBI base hit in the second and a two run single in the third. He also scored two runs. Trenton Vollink recorded two singles with a run driven home in the first. He scored both times and also drew a walk. Jacob Cates contributed a two-run base hit in the second and then singled and scored in the third.
Dawson Schiphoff ripped an RBI triple in the second inning and scored and then singled and scored in the third. Nick Bronstad hit RBI singles in both the second and third, scoring a run the first time. Jordan Ortega had only one hit but made it count, driving in two third-inning runs with a single and then scoring. He also scored in the second after being hit by a pitch.
Tyson Tessum delivered an RBI single in the third and then came around to score. Keaton Graves walked and scored in the second. Keith DeBoer’s third-inning run came after he was hit by a pitch. Ben Haack was also plunked with the baseball in the second. That led to his courtesy runner, Ethan Diehm, scoring a run.
Winning pitcher Haack worked three-plus innings. He yielded the four runs on three hits but only one of the runs was earned. The senior righthander struck out five batters and walked two. Schiphoff came on in relief with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth and induced his first batter to hit into a 4-6-3 double play. In his two-inning stint on the mound he struck out three and allowed just one hit. Although they turned in the twin killing, the Hawks were guilty of five errors on the night.
